We aren’t the only ones advocating for laughter in the workplace– the scientific and academic communities at Harvard University point to numerous studies backing the benefits of routine laughter.
Dr. Natalie Dattilo, Clinical Psychologist, Harvard Medical School Instructor, and Laugh.Events Advisor, recently discussed how to adopt a healthy lifestyle through laughter with The Harvard Gazette.
Dr. Datillo highlighted numerous reasons our minds thrive with daily giggles:
Lowers Stress: Laughter decreases cortisol, the stress hormone, in the body.
Eases pain: Laughter provides an endorphin hike linked to pain-relieving effects.
Improves mood: Rising dopamine and serotonin neurotransmitters help us feel our best.
Promoting these health benefits on a regular basis in the workplace is key for employee wellbeing. “When you’re not regularly activating the pleasure/reward centers of the brain they go offline. So, in order to feel good, we have to practice feeling good,” said Dr. Dattilo.
