How We’re Treating the Sunday Scaries

Laugh.events takes on workplace mental health challenges

  • In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re sharing a few strategies we’ve implemented at Laugh.Events to help rid off the Sunday Scaries

  • Through comedy show events and corporate trainings, we work closely with event organizers, mental health experts, and attendees themselves to ensure our events are positively impacting employee wellbeing

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’ve been reading about the prevalence of Sunday scaries. As a company focused on employee engagement, this got us thinking about how we can better promote the importance of focusing on mental health in the workplace.

Here are 3 ways we’re combatting the Sunday Scaries through comedy:

1) Surveying Event Organizers

Ahead of every event, we ask Event Organizers to fill us in on their group and event. We invite them to share details on everything from the current challenges their team might be facing to positive contributions we can highlight. According to Employee Benefit News, “COVID, global political unrest, economic uncertainty and layoffs have left employers and employees alike grappling with persistent uneasiness.” By getting the context around what challenges a team might be facing, we can help set the tone for the event. Whether they are looking to celebrate the completion of a recent project or give employees a moment of reprieve to combat burnout, we take all of this information into consideration when recommending experiences and selecting comedians for their group.

2) Partnering with Mental Health Experts

We work in partnership with our advisor, Dr. Natalie Dattilo, who is a Clinical Psychologist and Instructor at Harvard Medical School. We’ve learned how laughter can help reduce stress, and how this can be particularly valuable in work settings. Check out more on our work with Dr. Dattilo here:

3) Focusing on Engagement

We encourage communication in all our events, whether we’re hosting a virtual comedy show or in-person improv workshop. Our virtual hosts invite attendees to turn their mics on and send through messages in the chat depending on what they are comfortable with. Our team building activities are designed to boost morale and foster a sense of community, with pre-event surveys of attendees inviting them to share something new about themselves that their team may not already know. Last but not least, we ask all attendees to share their feedback in post-event surveys so we can constantly improve for future experiences.
